2021 youth program update

Steuben County REMC takes pride in giving back to the local community we serve. One of the ways we enjoy giving back is through our youth programs.

Regrettably, we have come to the conclusion that with the unpredictability of COVID-19, we will be unable to safely host some of our programs this year. The current state of the pandemic prevented us from having Indiana Electric Cooperative Page Day in January. There are too many uncertainties for us to be able to plan quality trips for summertime’s Indiana Youth Tour to Washington, D.C., and Touchstone Energy Camp.

The health and safety of our students and chaperones are always Steuben County REMC’s main priority, and the current state of the pandemic prevents us from being able to safely offer these programs.

Cooperative Calendar of Student Art Contest

All Indiana public, private or homeschooled students in kindergarten through 12th grade during the 2020-21 school year are encouraged to enter their best artwork for this contest, which will showcase the best submissions from each grade level in the 2022 Cooperative Calendar of Student Art.

A first-place artist will be selected for each grade and will receive a $200 prize. The artwork of each grade-level winner will also illustrate either the cover or a month of the calendar. Other prizes are available for honorable mention and artist of the year awards.

An entry form and a complete set of rules is at indianaconnection.org/for-youth/art-contest. Artwork must be received in the Indiana Connection Indianapolis office by March 19.

Youth Power and Hope Awards

Though this one is a bit farther away, keep the Youth Power and Hope Awards in your mind as you make your way through 2021.

Since 2009, the program has annually honored Indiana youth in grades 5-8 for their community service. Past winners have raised thousands of dollars and donated thousands of toys for Riley Hospital for Children, started a coat drive for the less fortunate, raised funds to cure diabetes, developed a program to provide police officers stuffed animals to comfort children in crisis situations and much more.

Winners receive a cash prize, a profile in an issue of Indiana Connection and more. Application information and the deadline will be announced in mid-2021. Keep reading the magazine for more information.
