In the Hoosier state, winter invariably brings freezing temperatures along with snowy and/or icy roads. While roadside breakdowns can strike at any time, unexpected automotive troubles during the winter months can be especially dangerous. Are you — and your vehicle — prepared to handle winter’s grasp if the unexpected happens?
AAA Hoosier Motor Club recommends that all automobiles be equipped with an emergency survival kit for winter driving. At a minimum, each kit should include:
- Fully-charged mobile phone pre-programmed with important numbers including those for family members and emergency service providers
- Cell phone charger equipped with a car adaptor
- Drinking water and non-perishable snacks for humans and pet passengers (if applicable)
- First aid kit
- Bag of abrasive material (sand, salt or cat litter) or traction mats
- Shovel
- Blankets and extra clothing including hats and gloves
- Flashlight with fresh batteries — and an extra set of fresh batteries, too
- Jumper cables
- Fire extinguisher
- Windshield washer deicer fluid
- Snow brush/ice scraper
- Warning devices (flares or triangles)
- Rope and rags
- Basic toolkit (screwdrivers, pliers, adjustable wrench)
Having your vehicle prepared and ready for winter weather can greatly increase the chances of your survival if you find yourself in a perilous situation.
