LaGrange County REMC installs a meter socket security seal when providing electric service. The meter socket security seal is in place to ensure that no one has removed the meter after it was installed by an REMC employee. The seal locks the enclosure to prevent accidental contact with the high voltage and to keep the equipment itself safe.
A second purpose is to prevent meter tampering. Meter tampering includes causing the meter to run slower (or not at all) or diverting electricity from the meter. Our meters detect and alert us when they have been removed from their socket.
Please ensure those with access to your residence are aware that tampering with the meter socket security seal is prohibited and may result in a penalty. Per our policy, a $300 tampering charge can be assessed when tampering occurs.
Please call us and schedule a time for us to come out and remove/disconnect power so that you can do electrical work safely.
