National Cocoa Day is December 13. Make this festive treat to enjoy on a cold winter day, or to give a friend or teacher as a Christmas present.
What you need:
- 2 clear plastic pastry bags
- Miniature marshmallows
- Toothpick
- Clear tape
- 10 starlight peppermint candies
- Red food coloring
- Spoon
- Small bowl
- ½ cup hot cocoa mix
- Red string or yarn
- Craft glue
- 2 small googly eyes
- 1 small red pom pom
- 1 cotton ball
What to do:
Holding one of the pastry bags open, place one miniature marshmallow into the end of the bag. Use a toothpick to push the marshmallow into the end of the bag. Fold over the pointy end of the bag and use a small piece of tape to hold it down.
Crush 10 starlight peppermints. (We placed the mints, one by one, on a cutting board and crushed them gently with the bottom of a glass.) Place the candy pieces in a small bowl, add a few drops of red food coloring, and stir. Spread out and let dry.
Add candy pieces to the pasty bag on top of the marshmallow. Then add 7 miniature marshmallows to create white trim on Santa’s hat. Set aside.
Fold over the bottom third of the second pastry bag and tape it down. Add hot cocoa mix. Then place this bag inside the bag with the candy pieces.
Add a small handful of marshmallows on top of the hot cocoa mix.
Tie a piece of red string or yarn into a bow around the bottom of the bags.
Use craft glue to attach two googly eyes and a red pom pom to the outside of the bags for Santa’s eyes and nose.
Tear a small piece of cotton from the cotton ball and roll it between your fingers to make Santa’s facial hair. Glue it under the red pom pom. Let dry.
