Peak times are here — Help beat the peak

Now that the summer months are here, bringing with them the highest demand for electricity, we’re reaching out to our valued members with a request to join us to conserve energy during peak periods. Between 3 and 6 p.m. in June, July, and August, the demand for electricity surges primarily due to increased use of air conditioning, among other factors. This heightened demand coincides with higher energy prices, as our power supplier, Hoosier Energy, bases charges on the cost of electricity at the time it is consumed. By voluntarily adjusting our habits slightly — such as turning off unnecessary lights, tweaking thermostats up by 2–3 degrees, and deferring the use of major appliances or hot water — we can help beat the peak.

This concerted effort to “beat the peak” is not just about immediate cost savings. It’s a strategic approach to leverage our collective power for the long-term benefit of the cooperative. Electricity costs vary throughout the day and year, influenced by the fundamental principles of supply and demand. During spring and fall, when the demand is lower, the base load generation suffices to meet our needs. However, in the extreme temperatures of winter and summer, we often rely on more expensive, higher-cost electricity to fulfill the increased demand. By shifting our energy consumption to off-peak times, we alleviate the strain on our grid and ensure a more efficient and cost-effective use of resources.

Joining the time-of-use rate is an excellent step towards managing your electricity usage more effectively, allowing you to enjoy lower rates by avoiding peak times. This initiative is more than just a cost-saving measure; it’s a commitment to sustainable living and community responsibility. As we look towards the future, it’s clear that we must work together more closely than ever to control our costs and optimize our electricity consumption. Your participation is crucial in helping us and the entire cooperative beat the peak. Thank you for your support and for being an active part of beating the peak.
