The year 1978 was historic. Not only was it the year of the blizzard, but it’s the year I began working at Knox County REMC as a truck driver/ groundman. In 1979, I was promoted to an apprentice lineman and after four years of training in the HEATs (Hoosier Energy Apprenticeship Training Program), became a journeyman lineman. As a lineman, I can remember not only the rush, but a sense of pride to see the lights come back on in the country after the storm. The rush and pride continue today. Serving our members is what we do. Not only today but tomorrow and into the future.
Though I enjoyed my years as a lineman, I decided it was time to move inside the office where I worked in several different departments.
I held the positions of purchasing agent, member services, director of operations, chief operating officer, and most recently, chief executive officer. Not only have I had the pleasure of working at the cooperative, but I have also had the opportunity to sit on many boards. I am proud to have been a part of Knox County Indiana Economic Development, Pike County Economic Development, Utility Services Board, Knox County Community Foundation, Indiana Military Museum, Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation, and the Illiana Watermelon Association.
One of the most significant changes I experienced during my tenure was the merger of Knox County and Sullivan County REMCs, which created WIN Energy REMC on October 1, 1997. Although challenging, bringing these two co-ops together was key to continuing our mission and best serving our members.
With great pride, I announce my retirement as chief executive officer from WIN Energy REMC, effective July 31. Throughout my years of service to the cooperative, I have worked with an incredible team and made connections that will last a lifetime. First, I want to thank my wife, Becky, for her unwavering support over the years. I would also like to thank the board of directors for the opportunities that they have given me and for their guidance and direction. Thank you to the WIN Energy REMC employees who work day in and day out to serve you. Being part of this team and working with our members for the past 45 years has been a pleasure.
The WIN Energy REMC team remains in trusted hands. The board of directors has named Leslie Beard, the current chief operating officer, as my successor and CEO, who will become effective August 1.
Thank you for your continued support and commitment to your hometown electric cooperative. It has been a joy to serve you!
