WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
Transmission and distribution power lines are a vital part of “the grid.” These lines incorporate separate voltages as power is transmitted from generating stations to member-consumers.
Distribution lines:
- These lines and equipment are owned by member-co-ops who deliver energy to member-consumers.
- The most common voltage of distribution lines is 12,470 kV.
- These lines are often found overhead but are sometimes located underground.

transmission lines:
- Transmission lines and equipment are used to transmit energy from generating facilities to primary substations.
- Transmission lines are installed on larger structures than distribution lines.
- Transmission voltages in use by Hoosier Energy range from 69kV to 345kV.
