Indiana Eats — King of the Coney

A trip to Fort Wayne wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Fort Wayne’s Famous Coney Island!

Just as Philadelphia has its cheesesteak and Chicago has its Italian Beef, Fort Wayne is famous for its Coney dog. That’s thanks to a small downtown diner that is the oldest hot dog stand in America.

Founded in 1914, Fort Wayne’s Famous Coney Island has been in the same family since 1916. Five years ago, after working for the family since the age of 15, Jim Todoran became a co-owner with Kathy Choka, whose grandfather purchased the restaurant in 1916.

The menu of Coney dogs, cheese dogs and hamburgers plus sides will have you coming back for more — as the restaurant’s many loyal customers will testify.

The next time you’re in Fort Wayne, make a trip to an institution and grab a bunful of Americana!
