It’s a matter of principles

Southern Indiana Power is proud to be your electric cooperative. Our passion is serving our members and helping our communities.

October is National Co-op Month, so this is the perfect time to reflect on three of our seven principles that have stood the test of time and provide a framework for the future.

VOLUNTARY AND OPEN MEMBERSHIP

Like all co-ops, Southern Indiana Power was created out of necessity — to meet a need that would have been otherwise unmet in our community. It’s hard to believe that 85 years ago, a group of neighbors banded together and organized our electric co-op so everyone in our community could benefit. Back then, a modest membership fee to the co-op could allow any farmer to get electricity brought to their farm.

Neighbors came together to tackle a problem that they couldn’t solve alone. They worked together to benefit the whole community, and the newly established electric lines helped power economic opportunity.

DEMOCRATIC MEMBER CONTROL

Our co-op is also well suited to meet the needs of our members because we are locally governed. The members of Southern Indiana Power’s Board of Directors, who help set long-term priorities for the co-op, also live locally on co-op lines. These board members have been elected by members just like you. We know our members have a valuable perspective, so we are continually seeking your input and encouraging you to weigh in on important issues and participate in director elections.

Our close connection to the community gives us a first-hand perspective on members’ priorities, enabling us to make more informed decisions on long-term priorities.

MEMBERS’ ECONOMIC PARTICIPATION

Southern Indiana Power’s mission is to provide safe, reliable, affordable power while improving the quality of life for our members. As a co-op, we are motivated by service to the membership, not corporate profits. Members contribute equitably to the capital of Southern Indiana Power. At least part of that capital remains the common property of the cooperative as we invest in programs, initiatives, capital projects, and support local activities. Because we are guided by seven cooperative principles, it’s not just about dollars — it’s about opportunity for all and fairness when engaging with our members.

Southern Indiana Power is a reflection of our local community and its evolving needs. We were formed out of necessity. Today, we are steadfast in our principles and focused on serving you.
