At a time when people change jobs more frequently, it’s refreshing to see someone who has spent 41 years with one employer. But Darrin Keehn hasn’t seen his time with Kankakee Valley REMC as just a job. To our retiring line foreman, it was a way to improve the lives of others.
Growing up here, Keehn never gave much thought to the REMC that powered his home. After graduating from high school, he spent some time working in construction and at a grain elevator. He knew some people who worked for the co-op and enjoyed it, so in August 1981, he joined as a groundman. He became a lineman and a crew leader before stepping into his present role.
Finding his work satisfying, Keehn said he was able to accomplish important things every day. He took pride in tracking down problems so he could get the lights back on for his neighbors and ensure reliable service. He also appreciated the co-op’s willingness to give him new opportunities and challenges while allowing him to provide a good life for his family.
Keehn envisions retirement to involve plenty of golfing, fishing, traveling and most of all, more time with his family. While he won’t miss driving along county roads during torrential storms trying to find downed lines, we know he’ll miss his work family … and we’ll miss him, too!
