Communications Specialist

Working as an electric cooperative communicator is a unique and deeply fulfilling experience. It’s a role that blends creativity, community engagement, and a steadfast commitment to making a positive impact. Each day presents new opportunities to connect with members, share valuable information, and highlight the cooperative principles that set us apart.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this job is working with young people to help shape the next generation of leaders. Our youth programs lie at the heart of these efforts, providing students with opportunities to learn, grow, and make meaningful connections.

STARTING YOUNG: SPARKING CURIOSITY

Our educational outreach begins with programs tailored for elementary school students. Through activities like 4-H projects, electrical safety demonstrations, and building simple circuit boards, we aim to spark curiosity and emphasize the importance of safety. These hands-on experiences teach valuable lessons and serve as the foundation for more impactful programs as students advance through school.

CAMP KILOWATT: BUILDING BRIGHT FUTURES

For middle schoolers, Camp Kilowatt is an unforgettable experience. This immersive, hands-on camp introduces students to the world of energy and cooperatives in a fun and engaging way. Campers participate in activities like building solar-powered cars, touring power plants, and learning about renewable energy. They also enjoy traditional camp experiences like team-building exercises and outdoor recreation, which help develop leadership skills and lasting friendships. It is incredible to see how this camp inspires students. Many leave Camp Kilowatt with a newfound interest in STEM fields and a deeper understanding of how their local cooperative works.

YOUTH TOUR: EMPOWERING TOMORROW’S LEADERS

For high school students, the Youth Tour to Washington, D.C., is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. This program allows students to visit the nation’s capital, meet lawmakers, and learn about government processes. Beyond the educational aspects, Youth Tour fosters connections with peers from across the country.

I was given the opportunity to chaperone in 2023, and it was by far the most fun seven days. Getting to know students from all over the state and watching them immerse themselves in a group of 90 kids that they had never met before was so special. Students came together as strangers and left as best friends, and thanks to social media and technology, they are still friends today.

STUDENT BOARD: LEARNING THROUGH ACTION

Our Student Board program is another cornerstone of our youth initiatives. High school students selected to be on our board gain hands-on experience. They participate in monthly meetings, learn how FCREMC works, and do hands-on activities, from building mock power lines to a financial budgeting activity. They learn about operations in each department of our cooperative and the education or skills required for the position. Students also participate in a yearly community service project, which is an Easter Egg hunt. Students plan, organize, and host the yearly egg hunt for anyone in the community to take part in. This program equips students with real-world skills and prepares them for future leadership roles.

Working with young people through these programs is a privilege that brings joy and purpose to my role as a communicator. These initiatives not only educate but also inspire the next generation to lead with knowledge, compassion, and a sense of responsibility. By investing in our youth, we’re investing in a brighter future for our cooperative and community.

If you have students who are interested in any of the programs mentioned, additional information and links to applications can be found on our website, fcremc.coop, under the Community tab on the Youth page.
