Spring is in the air! This season brings new growth, beautiful blooms, green grass, and often new opportunities. We are excited about the new opportunities the season brings for our cooperative as well.
As you may have heard, our lobby is closed to the public as we make security upgrades. Member and employee safety is always a top priority, so we are excited to share our upgrades in the coming months.
Reliable power supply
I have received several inquiries about the severe weather energy crisis in Texas. I want to share a little perspective and tell you how our cooperative is prepared for extreme situations.
It is important to note that record low and sustained temperatures across nearly the entire state of Texas created a huge demand for electricity, exceeding the winter forecast by nearly 17%. Nearly 40% of generation resources were incapacitated by the extreme cold. The simultaneous peak in demand and loss of generation required rolling blackouts to prevent a catastrophic failure of the entire energy grid.
Decatur County REMC purchases power from Hoosier Energy. Hoosier takes great care in maintaining generation resources that are protected and prepared to withstand extreme weather conditions. Hoosier also belongs to the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), an organization that delivers safe, cost-effective electric power across 15 states and into Canada, to ensure reliable transmission resources.
