Planting and maintaining trees for shade, savings, and safety

Trees have many benefits. They add curb appeal to residences and businesses, improve air quality, and provide shade. Strategically planting trees can also help lower your energy bills and make your home more comfortable.

Leafy trees on the south, east, and west sides of your home can provide shade from the hot summer sun, keeping your home cooler. When the weather cools, and the leaves fall off, they let the sun through, helping keep your home warmer.

Winter can also bring cold winds. Evergreen trees on the northwest side of your home block harsh winter winds.

It’s important to consider the location of utilities before you decide where to plant trees. Trees that grow too close to overhead power lines can be a safety hazard and cause blinks and outages. Boone REMC’s rigorous tree-trimming program aims to reduce these risks. We take a proactive approach to maintaining reliable electric service for our members by contracting with a trained arborist who surveys our lines for proper clearance.

Always be sure to call 811 or visit Indiana811.org to have underground utility lines as well, to avoid utility service outages, expensive repair bills, serious injury or death.
