Red Waldorf Cake
Ingredients
- 2 eggs
- ½ cup cocoa powder
- ¼ cup red food coloring
- 2¼ cups sifted cake flour or 2 cups sifted regular flour
- ½ cup shortening
- 1½ cups sugar
- 1 t. vanilla
- 1 cup buttermilk or sour milk
- 1 t. baking soda
- 1 t. vinegar
Directions
Grease and flour two 9-inch round pans or one 13×9-inch pan. Stir cocoa and food coloring together and set aside.
In another bowl, stir flour and ½ t. salt. Set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, beat shortening with mixer for 30 seconds. Add sugar and vanilla. Beat well. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each addition. Beat in cocoa mixture. Add flour mixture and beat on low speed until combined. Stir baking soda and vinegar together. Add to batter and mix. Pour into pan and bake at 350 F for 30 to 35 minutes.
Cool and frost with your favorite frosting.
Cook's Notes
Buttermilk can be replaced with sour milk. When using sour milk, place 1 T. vinegar or lemon juice in measuring cup and add enough milk to make 1 cup liquid. Stir and let stand for 5 minutes before using.
