Serving the need in our communities

Hands clasping a heart

Recently, Southern Indiana Power donated $1,000 each to our local schools. Cannelton, North Spencer, Perry Central, South Spencer and Tell City school corporations provide breakfast and lunch programs to students during the school year and summer but also provided an option during the COVID-19 pandemic as well. Families could pick up their food at the schools or selected sites and/or have it dropped off at their residence.

With that said, it was brought to the attention at Southern Indiana Power, that local families had additional needs other than just food. Each school has their own unique programs in addition to the breakfast/lunch programs currently offered, and this is where the needs originated. If you aren’t someone who has been affected by the current situation, it’s sometimes hard to see the struggles other families could be facing by only having one working parent or both parents unemployed. The day-to-day hygiene items such as soap, toothpaste, deodorant, laundry detergent, etc., are the things we tend to take for granted and are the items that are one of the greatest needs in our communities right now.

Southern Indiana Power recognized this and wanted to help alleviate a fraction of the stress families have been experiencing during these challenging times.

“It’s truly a difficult situation since we’ve never experienced a pandemic or life event such as this in our day and age, so for some local families trying to provide basic necessities has been a real challenge, and we just wanted to help in some way,” said Steve Seibert, president/CEO of Southern Indiana Power.

Southern Indiana Power, in addition to the recent donation, also donates a total of 200 cases of bottled water every year to the same local schools (except Cannelton). This allows them to sell each bottled water for $1 at various school events throughout the year and keep the money for their clubs and sports programs.
