This summer, several lucky Steuben County youths will enjoy some educational and fun trips, courtesy of Steuben County REMC.
Touchstone Energy Camp
At the Touchstone Energy Camp at Camp Tecumseh in Brookston, Angola Middle Schoolers Alexander Orn and Jackson Selner, as well as local homeschooler Jagger Hurraw, will be joined by dozens of other campers from around the state to take part in the annual event that puts our future generations in touch with the electric industry. Here they will learn about the role of a lineman, the importance of electrical safety, various properties of electricity and much more, all while enjoying the great outdoors. Attendees will enjoy swimming, canoeing, hiking, ziplining, and several other fun activities while meeting their peers and making new friends.
Indiana Youth Tour
Some local high school juniors will also join youths from around the state to take part in a trip this summer. Isabell Deem, Brooklynn Shively and Jayden Pearson of Angola High School will set out on the 2019 Electric Cooperative Youth Tour to Washington, D.C.
Deem is the daughter of Holly and John Deem of Angola. She is a member of the Mayor’s Youth Council and FIST, and plans to bring her experiences back to Steuben County by sharing what she learns with area after-school program attendees. She plans to study medicine and loves working with kids.
Shively is the daughter of Jeff and Kelly Shively of Angola. She participates in Academic Bowl at school and founded a non-profit organization called ReVintage that distributes business professional clothing to RISE Inc. clients to assist them in their job search. She wants a career in a STEM-related field.
Pearson is the son of Lindsay Steury and Jimmy Pearson. He is the captain of the Angola Speech and Debate Club and is communications ambassador for the Mayor’s Youth Council. He plans to pursue a career in research.
The students were selected after applying, submitting an essay and being interviewed by the Youth Tour committee. The Indiana delegation will include over 120 students from across the state, each selected by his/her local cooperative. Beginning June 7, these Hoosier students will travel to Washington, D.C., where they will join nearly 1,600 students representing 44 states to tour our nation’s capital and other historical sites, including the 9/11 Flight 93 National Memorial, the Gettysburg battlefields, the National Mall and much more.
“We are so proud to have these students representing our county and our community,” said Jaime Walker, director of member services for Steuben County REMC. “They are truly valuable to the local Steuben County community, now and in the future, and their determination and tenacity to learn, grow and make this world a better place is inspiring. We hope that these experiences lend themselves to their education and their worldviews. Congratulations to all of our representatives!”
